Tag rugby is a non-contact version of rugby which is ideally suited for younger age groups. at Ponteland we have tag teams in under7's and under 8's.
We welcome boys and girls aged 6 years and upwards to join us at our training sessions held on Sunday mornings between 10.30am and 12pm. Under 7's caters for all year 2 children and year 1 children once they have reached the age of 6 years. Under 8's caters for pupils in year 3.
At under 9's level contact rugby is introduced.
Tag rugby aims to develop young players in the following areas:
- Teamwork
- Confidence
- Communication
- Ball handling skills
- Speed, agility and co-ordination
- Understanding and obeying rules
- Sportsmanship
The most important thing is that taking part is FUN.
Training Sessions and Matches
Ponteland tag rugby teams play matches and train on Sunday mornings during the season (September to May). During training young players take part in exercises and games to develop their skills.
Matches are held regularly throughout the season. Normally two visiting teams are hosted at the same time. All three teams play two matches, about 7 minutes each way. In addition to the referee, each team has a coach on the pitch at all times to direct and develop play.
Each team has seven players, where necessary players are rotated to ensure everybody gets a game regardless of ability.
After the match the players shake hands and the host team entertains the visitors in the clubhouse.
The Northumberland County Cup competition is the highlight of the competitive season. In March 2008, Ponteland RFC hosted the championships and one of our teams reached the semi-finals, losing out in a hard fought match to Alnwick RFC (the eventual champions).
